Tips for Crewing Offshore

Lee Cumberland, crew member aboard the catamaran 'Tandem II' in the 2014 Caribbean 1500 rally, write about what he's learned over the past year sailing on offshore deliveries. How to pack, where to sleep, how to act and what to do if you're new to the offshore sailing game. Lee sailed with Andy last spring on a few deliveries to and from New England.

“Every incident offshore could have been prevented before they ever left the dock. It’s all about preparation. Even in bad weather, it’s the preparation that will determine the outcome.”

Tick, tick, tick: Time is running out until the start of the 25th Carib1500

So what goes on during the hectic week leading up to the start of a long offshore voyage? Lyall Burgess and Pete Burch have been focusing on completing the safety inspections as efficiently as possible for those boats that have arrived early. This got off to a great start on Saturday, with Lone Star, the veteran ARC Rally participant, having the honor of the first safety check to get completed on the first try. Photo shows the crews of Tom Tom and Oblivion at Skipjack Nautical Wares for last night's happy hour.

Andy's Biased Review of 'Red Dot on the Ocean: The Matt Rutherford Story'

Andy Schell reviews the new documentary about the life of Matt Rutherford and how he went from troubled teenager to legendary solo sailor. In short - watch it. It's an inspirational tale and an absolutely riveting recounting of what will go down in history as one of the greatest small boat voyages of all time. The fact that Matt nearly ended up spending his life in prison only makes it more interesting. Truly moving. The movie makes it's theatrical debut this Friday in New York City at the Quad Cinema. Kamau Kwabena's offshore yacht & an interview with Andy Schell

Kamau Kwabena's offshore yacht & an interview with Andy Schell

Kamau Kwabena got in touch with Andy Schell prior to last week's Annapolis Sailboat Show. They met at City Dock coffee to discuss offshore sailing and Kamau's self-designed and soon to be self-built 50-foot sailing yacht. Kamau is 6'5" and 300 pounds, so the standard offshore boats don't exactly 'fit' him! His design was brilliant. This is his chat with Andy at the coffee shop, and the first original video on 59-north.com.

What I learned crossing the Atlantic

What I learned crossing the Atlantic

Rudolphe Dutel recounts his first Atlantic crossing sailing the classic trade wind route with the ARC rally last November - complete with great photos and cool GIFs. After finishing the Paris Marathon in 2009, sailing redefined his take on 'long-term' projects. "You live around sailing," he writes, "instead of running around your routine. Both are extremely rewarding and quite humbling."

This week in ocean sailing (and other cool stuff)

As we head towards the re-launch of 59-north.com in the next few weeks, I'm starting something today that I plan to continue and make a feature of the new site/newsletter. In short, I learn a lot about what I talk and write about when it comes to offshore sailing by voraciously reading others. I'd like to share that. Here's new original content from 59-north.com, plus what I found most interesting this past week around the web and in print:

Expect the Unexpected Offshore

Expect the Unexpected Offshore

Mario Vittone, retired USCG rescue swimmer and noted expert on ocean wilderness survival, recounts the dramatic rescue of the sailing yacht Mirage in 1995, and how not to end up in the same situation. "The three sailors that he put in the back of the helicopter with me don’t know that we don’t have enough gas to get back. Not into this headwind. Pilot Jay Balda is thinking that his crew might be dead soon and its all his fault."
